Food Donation Atlas & Website
The Global FoodBanking Network (GFN) — 2020
Data-driven interactive website mapping legal barriers to food donation across GFN member countries, developed in collaboration with Harvard Law School’s Food Law and Policy Clinic.
----------
Overview
The Global FoodBanking Network partnered with the Harvard Law School Food Law and Policy Clinic to refresh the Food Donation Atlas — a data-driven website that maps legal barriers to food donation across GFN member countries. The goal was to make complex legal and policy information more accessible, comparable, and easier to navigate for a global audience.
The Challenge
The project required translating dense, country-specific legal data into a clear, intuitive digital experience. The site needed to support multiple layers of information — including legal guides, policy recommendations, executive summaries, and comparative statistics — while remaining approachable and easy to use for policymakers, researchers, and nonprofit stakeholders.
My Role
I was involved in the design and construction of the website and collaborated on the development of the interactive Food Donation Atlas. This included integrating an animated, data-driven world map created in Hype into the website and supporting the overall user experience and visual design.
Approach
• Designed a clean, structured interface to support complex, text-heavy content
• Collaborated with cross-disciplinary teams to align design with legal and data requirements
• Helped develop and integrate an interactive world map that allowed users to explore country-level data, comparative statistics, and search functionality
• Focused on clarity, usability, and consistency across a large volume of content
Outcome
The refreshed Food Donation Atlas and website provided GFN with a more accessible, user-friendly platform for sharing critical information about food donation policy worldwide. The final product supported global comparison, research, and advocacy efforts through a clear visual framework and interactive tools. Social ads were created to introduce the site to new users.
